Cataract
Cataract is a pathology that consists of the progressive opacification of the crystalline lens, a transparent biconvex lens located between the iris and the vitreous body, which, as it ages, risks compromising vision by obstructing light from its regular optical path.
Cataract is not transmissible from one eye to another, although it can occur in both eyes; if neglected, it can even lead to blindness.
Symptom of Cataract
Since cataract is a very slow-progressing disease, it is difficult for patients to detect its presence in the early stages. The most common symptoms that can set alarm bells are:
Causes of Cataract
In most cases, cataract tends to develop naturally after the age of 60 (age-related cataract), but there are many factors that can lead to the gradual opacification of the crystalline lens. Cataract can also occur after eye trauma, in the presence of diseases such as diabetes, after prolonged intake of specific medications or it can be hereditary.
Cataract Diagnosis
Cataract is generally diagnosed by means of a comprehensive eye examination during which the following tests are carried out:
In special cases where the cataract is at an advanced stage and the ocular fundus cannot be examined, an ocular ultrasound can be performed.
Treatment of Cataract
Cataract is a pathology whose only therapeutic solution is the removal of the opacified crystalline lens by surgery. In recent years, a new surgical procedure has been introduced to replace the traditional one called Femto Laser Cataract Surgery.
Treatment of Cataract - Recovery Time
In general, recovery times for uncomplicated senile cataracts are very rapid: from the first day onwards patients can recover optimal visual function. However, it is prudent to recommend a period of 5/6 days of absolute rest.
Possible Intervention Techniques
Cataract microsurgery– Femto Laser Cataract Surgery
Femto Laser Cataract Surgery, using the Femtosecond-Laser, is a surgical procedure for the treatment of cataract.
Secondary cataract intervention
Secondary cataract is defined as an opacification of the posterior capsule after cataract surgery.
