Cataract microsurgery – Femto Laser Cataract Surgery

The removal of the opacified crystalline lens by surgery is the only therapeutic solution for the treatment of cataract.

Femto Laser Cataract Surgery, which involves the use of the Femtosecond-Laser to support the surgeon, is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure for the treatment of cataract, replacing the traditional one previously on a regular basis.

The aim is to achieve greater precision in the surgical act and minimise the risk of error.

The operation is carried out in three stages: access, removal and replacement. The first stage involves making an incision in the cornea to allow the surgeon to access the inside of the eye to remove the cataract. The Femto Laser ensures precise reproducible cuts, guaranteeing rapid visual recovery and quality of vision. The second stage involves removing the crystalline lens in several steps using the Femto laser and ultrasound probe. The third stage involves implanting a lens (artificial crystalline lens) inside the eye using a special injector.

Thanks to the Femto Laser, the surgeon can perform his own movements, adapting perfectly to the anatomical characteristics of the patient's eye. The intervention lasts a few tens of minutes and is performed on an outpatient or day hospital basis: the surgical act is generally performed under topical anaesthesia (drops) or loco-regional anaesthesia (peribulbar or retrobulbar puncture), only in rare cases is it necessary to use general anaesthesia.

Pre- and Postoperative Examinations for Cataract Microsurgery

For intervention, the examinations useful for the diagnostic pathway are performed. Subsequently, refractive examination and OCT are used to monitor the proper functional recovery of the eye.

Recovery Time for Cataract Microsurgery

In general, recovery times for uncomplicated age-related cataracts are very rapid: from the first day onwards patients can recover optimal visual function. However, it is prudent to recommend a period of 5/6 days of absolute rest.
