Professional experience
Michele Coppola is a surgeon specialised in ophthalmology, trained in the treatment of vitreo-retinal diseases, in particular retinal detachment, macular diseases and diabetic retinopathy. He is also interested in the treatment of anterior segment diseases, from corneal transplant to cataracts and glaucoma.
A well-established knowledge of clinical retinal pathology, that is, hereditary retinal dystrophies, is the foundation to provide genetic counselling for familial hereditary diseases of the visual system.
In the paediatric field, Dr Michele Coppola deals with pathologies of pre-term infants, with developmental problems involving the retina, and with patients suffering from syndromic disorders, such as Crouzon Syndrome, which involves severe craniofacial malformations with functional damage.
Graduated with full marks in 1987, he gained experience and training in surgery by working at the Ophthalmology Department of the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, alongside Prof. Vito De Molfetta, as an attending assistant initially and since 1999 as a Medical Director.
He did internships abroad, at Cornell University in New York (NY) directed by Prof. Stanley Chang, at Retina Consultants in St. Louis (MA) with M.A. Thomas, MD, at the Eye Era and Throat Hospital in New York (NY) with Prof. L.A. Yannuzzi or even attending the Aughenklinik in Bonn directed by Prof. Spitznass. After these internships, he was appoined Head of the Vitreous Outpatient Clinic for the management of patients operated on in the field of vitreo-retinal diseases.
Since June 2010, he has been the Director of the of Ophthalmology Department at the Desio Hospital, promoting the creation of a start-up for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
Since November 2017, Dr Coppola has been Director of the Ophthalmology Department at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza.
The introduction of minimally invasive surgery, that is, the use of 25-27 Gauges instrumentation, plus the adoption of advanced technologies and techniques, has made it possible to update to state-of-the-art treatment strategies for vitreo-retinal diseases with improved clinical outcomes and post-operative recovery of patients.
Teaching
In addition to his work as a surgeon, Dr Michele Coppola is also involved in the training of resident doctors.
During the years as a professional in Desio, he founded a School of Ophthalmic Surgery aimed at permanent educational training, also with multimedia supports. The aim of this school is to train young surgeons who are already studying ophthalmology, but who are still in the training stage, that is, resident doctors. This is the result of a specific collaboration with the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. Now the Ophthalmology Department of S. Gerardo has taken over from the Department of Desio to become a full member of the training network of the School of Specialisation in Ophthalmology of the Vita&Salute University of HSR. The first students who took part in the training courses have now achieved full professional autonomy in eye surgery and are working successfully in other Italian centres.
Another experience in Monza, which was absolutely innovative and original for Italian ophthalmology, was the international Fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery of a young Polish specialist: awarded a scholarship by the non-profit organisation ESASO (European School for Advanced Study Ophthalmology) in Lugano (CH), Dr Michal Post was able to acquire skills in the field of retinal surgery.
Moreover, the Monza School of Surgery team is one of the very first in Italy to have adopted 3D surgery and to organise international streaming meetings using this method. This innovative approach makes it possible to transmit 'live surgery' and to share the operating field with observers through a three-dimensional screen and special 3D glasses.
Since 2015, Dr Coppola has been a short-term lecturer at the School of Specialisation in Ophthalmology of the Vita e Salute University of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
